Moscow (Reuters) - On Saturday, a Russian passenger plane ran away from an airport runway outside Russia's southern city of Sochi, injuring 18 people and setting fire, officials and state media said.
Russia's Healthcare Ministry said 18 people were injured but said there was no death. State news agency RIA said that a member of a Sochi Airport employee died during cleaning.
Boeing 737-800 from UIAR, after taking 164 passengers of Sochi and six crew members from Moscow, did not break in time after landing, RIA said citing local emergency services.
The aircraft had landed in heavy rains and with a strong telwind, Russian civil aviation officer Oleg Smirnov told state television channel Rosia 24, who showed images of the aircraft with damaged engines and wings.
Sochi Airport said on its website that the flying aircraft was extinguished in eight minutes and all those on board were evacuated within 17 minutes.
Russian Flight Safety Monitor will evaluate Sochi airport and UTIER, reported to the Rossia24 channel.
Security concerns have affected Russia's airline industry as there have been many fatal accidents in recent years.
In June, a Uuter aircraft carrying Peruvian football fans from World Cup city Aterinburg to Tumane in Siberia had to land on the ground due to engine failure, causing the cabin to be filled with smoking.
